The Motivated Sequence

Page history last edited by Mr. Mullen 7 years, 4 months ago

The Motivated Sequence is a method of persuasion and argumentation.

The Motivated Sequence is a five-step argument that convinces the audience that they NEED something they lack that will make their lives better, The writer's purpose is to identify that need, explain how the need can be fulfilled, and to inspire and MOTIVATE the audience to do something specific to satisfy that need.

The 5 steps of the motivated sequence:

The Attention Step

The Need Step

The Solution Step

The Visualization Step

The Action Step

  • create or change a law

  • stop smoking
  • stop drinking and driving
  • exercise more
  • help children
  • recycle
  • prevent child obesity

LOOK  AT  THE  SAMPLE:

The burgers at McDonald's are getting larger. The portions at Applebee's are huge. The aisles at supermarkets are stacked to the ceilings with sugar, fat, and carbohydrates. Americans eat too much and do not exercise enough. Because of our eating habits, more people are overweight in the United States than any other country in the world, and we suffer from the highest instances of weight-related diseases in the world.

This is the attention step.

  • Get the audience's attention by surprising them or offering an eye-opening statictic.
  • Get an emotional response from your audience in the attention step.

Americans need to improve their health by eating better and exercising. By changing our eating habits and becoming involved in heart-healthy activities, we will live longer and live healthier.

This is the need step.

  • Simply state what needs to be done or what needs to change.
  • Be specific.

How can Americans change their habits? The change begins at home. Parents can replace junk food full of sugar and fat with fresh fruits and vegetables. Parents can offer their children healthy snacks like fresh fruit. Schools can get rid of the candy and soda machines and offer healthy choices that include fresh water, milk, and fat-free snacks.

Of course, Americans can also exercise more. Companies can offer employees a discount on their health insurance contributions if they participate in an exercise program. Local governments can combine civic duty with healthy living by improving athletic tracks and building community centers that offer exercise and swimming programs. Insurance companies can offer discounts to citizens who participate in them.

This is the solution step or the satisfaction step. Here you wll describe how the need is satisfied.

Note that this step can be two paragraphs.

Picture a healthy, slim and trim America. Health care costs will plummet because fewer people are getting sick. Companies will report dramatic increases in productivity because employees will be healthy and on the job. Children will do better in school because they are alert and ready to learn.

This is the visualization step.

  • Show the reader the benefits of solving the problem.
  • Look into the future and show how everyone is leading a better life because the problem has been solved in the way you propose.

What do we have to do to make this vision a reality? Join a gym. Skip the chip aisle at the supermarket. Contact your local hospital or your doctor for information about the exercise and healthy eating classes. Start small, then stay small!

This is the action step.

  • Give the reader specific instructions.
  • Tell them what they need to do in order to solve the problem.
